The Importance of Feeding Your Imagination: The Key to Creativity, Success, and Fulfilment in Life & Business.

This is the second article in our 3-part series on life and business.

Here is the next article in the series - Developing a Spirit of Resilience.

Imagination—a powerful force often dismissed as a childhood indulgence—is the foundation of creativity, innovation, and meaningful living. Yet, as adults, many of us relegate play to something trivial, ignoring its critical role in fostering imagination and fueling personal and professional growth. At Nel AI Business Consultancy (Nel ABC), we believe that feeding your imagination through play is essential for not only unlocking creativity but also for thriving in today’s rapidly evolving world.

The Neglect of Play in Adulthood

Growing up, my favourite gift to receive was Lego. Opening the brand new box, tearing out the pieces and assembling it based on the instructions provided to form the castle, spaceship, etc. was fun, but not the most fun for me. After I’ve completed the main design, and some alternate designs (depending on my mood and level of patience), what was truly gratifying is breaking down all the pieces, and throwing everything into my huge Lego bucket. How I approach Lego is, “Today I shall build… a helicopter!” Then I would use everything I can find in the bucket and build the most multi-colored, odd-looking helicopter in the world. It wouldn’t win any design award, but it was mine, and it was fun.

As children, play comes naturally to us. Through it, we conjure imaginary worlds, explore endless possibilities, and approach challenges with creativity and resilience. However, as adults, societal norms and rigid structures often stifle this innate playfulness. We are taught to conform—to think, dress, and behave the same. This conformity discourages imagination, leaving little room for originality and authenticity. Yet, imagination is not just child’s play; it is a vital tool that enables us to visualize, innovate, and achieve our desired future.

Imagination as a Double-Edged Sword

Imagination can either empower or paralyze us. When used positively, it allows us to visualize our aspirations, connect the dots in our lives, and create solutions to complex problems. Conversely, when used negatively, it fuels anxiety and fear, locking us in cycles of mediocrity. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, said, "The imagination is literally the workshop wherein are fashioned all plans created by man". Many people unknowingly use their imagination against themselves, focusing on anxieties and unwanted outcomes. Have you noticed children don’t use imagination to roleplay sad, depressed characters when they play? As we mature as children into adults, the circumstances of life feed negativity into our minds. Instead of roleplaying victors and overcomers, we roleplay victims, a helpless cog in this machine of society, stuck in our circumstances and unable to escape.

Instead of using our imagination to see us in our present circumstance, it is important to visualize our desired future, acting "like the person we want to become". As an actor who can embody characters through imagination, you can step into your envisioned self. Let me illustrate this with an example. Imagine you and Bill Gates (or a business leader you admire) switched bodies. Only the essence of the persons changed, so Bill Gates is now in you, with your level of intelligence, knowledge, network, and net worth. Do you think Bill Gates is able to succeed as you? For my case, for sure Bill Gates would succeed more in my circumstance, so what is the difference? He would know what I am missing and work to regain the skills and knowledge needed to build a successful business. On the flipside, if I switch bodies with a CEO like Tim Cook, with my current level of knowledge and skills can I run Apple? If not then what is missing? I encourage you to run this example in your head and you will realise that what you need is not so far out of reach.

Visualizing Your Desired Future: The Path to Authenticity

Authenticity begins with visualizing the future we want. Imagination lets us step into the life we aspire to lead, shaping our thoughts, actions, and decisions to align with our vision. This ability to mentally inhabit our goals is akin to an actor embodying a character—it requires us to believe in the possibilities we create. Breaking free from societal molds and embracing imagination allows us to connect with our true selves, unlocking the authenticity that sets us apart. For many of us growing up in Singapore, we were dressed the same, taught to think the same, behave the same. Harmony through conformity is encouraged implicitly, and in many places where we live, study and work, the nail that sticks out is rewarded with a hammer blow back into place. Resilience is therefore needed (and we will discuss that in detail in next weekend’s article).

Connecting the Dots: The Role of Play in Creativity

Imagination thrives on connecting seemingly unrelated ideas. Play serves as the medium through which we experiment, discover, and innovate. Engaging in sports, music, games, or hobbies fosters creativity and breathes life into our work. By adopting a playful mindset, we approach challenges with curiosity, finding joy in the process of trial and error. This fusion of work and play creates a more fulfilling life where growth becomes a natural byproduct of exploration.

The Rise of the Polymath: Cultivating Multiple Skills Through Play

Historically, polymaths like Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein exemplified the power of imagination across diverse fields. Today, in a world characterized by rapid technological change, developing skills in multiple disciplines is increasingly important. Play encourages us to explore varied interests, enabling us to become generalists with deep expertise in certain areas. The key here is consistency. There is little value in being a new-year-resolutionist who gives up in March. In any field you choose to feed your imagination, stick with it long enough to master it. As a guitar player for 27 years, and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner for 7, I can attest that developing deep expertise in a field that you love is one of the most gratifying experiences for personal development. The goal is mastery, and with time you too can develop mastery in multiple areas and see it enrich every area of your life.

Leveraging AI to Enhance Imagination

Traditionally, business ownership required being a generalist, especially for solopreneurs. However, with the rise of agentic AI, even specialists can thrive as entrepreneurs. AI can handle areas where individuals lack expertise, freeing them to focus on their strengths and passions. By leveraging AI, business owners can amplify their creativity, tackle complex problems, and scale their operations without being bogged down by administrative tasks.
